GRADING SYSTEM

As pertaining in all polytechnics in the country, at the end of each semester, the students are graded on the basis of the continuous assessment (40%) and examinations (60%) in the individual courses, and their overall academic standing determined in terms of all courses taken in the semester. The grading system adopted is based on the raw score (Mark %) obtained in a course. This is converted into letter grades (LG) with their corresponding numerical equivalents (NE). These are used in determining their grade point average (GPA) and consequently calculating their cumulative grade point average (CGPA) used in determining the final grades and classes, e.g. first, second class lower or upper, pass or fail. The following is a description of the criteria used in assigning letter grades:

HND WATER MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

An adequate supply of good quality safe water is essential to the promotion of public health.  In many of the less developed parts of the world particularly in tropical areas, the health hazards caused by polluted water supplies are more numerous and more serious than those in temperate and more developed areas.

The purpose of this course is to put together a programme in water management and production and administration in a simple and logical form.  The various components of the programme are geared toward investigating the development, management and administration of a water supply and sewage disposal schemes for the benefit of industries and the entire nation as a whole. For instance, the course targets water producers and marketers as well as all those concerned with water treatment and consumption.

This course is not designed for purely science or engineering students, although they may find some section to be very useful especially topics treated in the business administration, but it is, intended for technicians leaders of rural communities, administrators of schools or hospitals and others who wish to develop a  water supply and sewage disposal scheme for their own use.  It is hoped that each section will give some help in solving the many problems involved in such an exercise.

The sections giving formulae and their use may also help in the documentation of information required by a central authority when considering the development and financing of a supply.

It is important when considering a water supply, to consider at the same time the disposal of the waste water after use.  It is easy to introduce a cycle which the waste water from the community pollutes the supply.  This must be considered when investigating source, and if necessary access to the land surrounding a source must be restricted.

The course considers also, the characteristics of water, available both chemically and biologically bearing in mind that  no single system of water treatment can be universally applicable, since all water sources are considered on their individual merits.

It is our hope that this programme contributes to produce water specialist whose basic competencies and advice will help transform the numerous water and environmental challenges, as well as other public health issues that confront our society today.

THANK YOU.

Director of Programmes
